I Did a {.dev}

I am a C++ developer by day, working on an old C/C++ trying to get it up to speed for my current employer. We work in real-time push-to-talk encrypted systems! In my spare time (every second I can get) I like writing Go. Biggest passion is compilers, and representing new constructs of computation (the act of executing rules given some assumptions and restrictions to achieve calculation on physical media.) Really into reading about "alternative" types of computers (neuromorphic, water-based, etc) I would LOVE a job as a compiler engineer, but alas, I have no PhD and I have not wanted to attempt tackling the libraries that exist (gcc, llvm, etc.) I'd love to make a new compiler backend though... if only I had the time and it paid-out.
So, you've stumbled upon my corner of the internet. Welcome. As it turns out, today is my birthday. Yay me. I’ve reached another power of 2! I’ve promised myself that after I was “good enough” I would start blogging and writing software more publicly, but no matter how much further ahead I get, I just never really felt ready. I still don’t. I’m going to do it anyway, because I know it will at least be higher quality than X and Insta “tech influencers.” So I can say I’m at least above “a” bar, even if it’s a low one.
about.md
I’m C++ dev with a penchant for diving into the bits and bytes that make our digital world tick. For the past seven years, I've been neck-deep in everything from military R&D to real-time analytics engines. These days, I'm working on push-to-talk communications tech for some three-letter agencies and emergency services. It's not the kind of stuff that makes for great small talk at parties, but it keeps my brain buzzing and it makes “an impact,” whatever the hell that means.
Now, you might be wondering, "Why start a blog?" Good question. I've been asking myself the same thing. Truth is, I've got this itch to dig deeper into the nitty-gritty of low-level programming, and I figured why not bring some folks along for the ride?
Here's the deal: I don't have all the answers. Hell, half the time I feel like I'm barely keeping my head above water in this vast ocean of code. But that's the fun part, right? We're here to learn, to explore, to bang our heads against complex problems until something finally clicks.
What can you expect from this blog? We'll be diving into topics like compiler development, bitwise operations, and all those thorny areas of programming that often get glossed over. Some of this stuff I know pretty well, other parts... well, we'll figure those out together.
Fair warning: my writing style is about as organized as a hard drive after a power surge. One minute we might be talking about memory allocation, the next I'm drawing parallels to life on a remote island. It's just how my brain works. Bear with me - sometimes those weird connections lead to unexpected insights.
I'm not here to preach from on high or pretend I'm some coding guru. I'm just a guy trying to understand this stuff better, and I figure writing about it might help both of us. We'll tackle each concept step by step, use plenty of examples, and hopefully, have some "aha!" moments along the way.
So if you're ready to roll up your sleeves and really dig into what's happening under the hood of your computer, stick around. It won't always be pretty, we might hit some dead ends, but hey - that's part of the fun.
Got questions? Ask 'em. See something I've gotten wrong? Call me out (politely, or I will consider you too weak of a human to care about your opinion.)
